We are living in troubled times; intolerance and hatred seem to be the order of the day. Unfortunately, the situation seems to deteriorate with every passing day, so much so, that some people can go to any extent to eliminate a dissenting voice.
Very recently, Dr. Avijit Roy, a prominent American freethinker, writer and blogger of Bangladeshi origin, was hacked to death by unidentified assailants in the streets of Dhaka, Bangladesh. His wife, Rafida Ahmed was with him and sustained serious wounds of machetes. Dr. Roy was the founder of the Mukto-Mona (Free-mind) blog site – which champions liberal secular writing; and was also a contributor to the Center for Inquiry, a U.S. based charity promoting free thought. It is high time for all of us, who value freedom of speech and expression, to raise our concerns against such brutalities.
Please join us at this event organized by concerned members of the FIU community and hosted by the Secular Student Alliance @ FIU, to commemorate the loss of Dr. Avijit Roy, and to reaffirm our commitment to the fight against any and all kinds of intolerance to opposing views. All students, faculty and staff are welcome to send a clear message that free speech cannot be silenced by murder and atrocities. The event will take place at the Green Library Breezeway.
